The word "yoga" comes from the Sanskrit root yuj, which means "to join" or "to yoke". Yoga is an ancient Indian philosophy and the oldest defined practices of self development. It was introduced by India over 5 thousand years ago. It was designed as a path to spiritual enlightenment. Yoga is based on a harmonizing system of development for the body, mind, and spirit.

It will make your body strong and flexible; it also improves the functioning of the respiratory, circulatory, digestive, and hormonal systems. Yoga brings about emotional stability and clarity of mind.

The methods of yoga includes ethical disciplines, physical postures, breathing control and as well as meditation. Classical yoga has an eight stages process of spiritual development known as the ‘eight limbs of yoga”. Yoga is not a series of consecutive steps, but a continuous and changing process that helps to clear away the mental obscurities that prevent us from seeing clearly.

Basic Yoga Equipment

Yogawear: Comfortable, breathable clothes are recommended for yoga. You probably want to wear a shirt that is a little bit form-fitting, since in many yoga poses your head comes below your hips and your shirt can slide down. Comfortable exercise pants or shorts are also recommended.

Yoga Mats: Another common piece of Yoga equipment is a yoga mat, also called a sticky mat. The mat helps define your personal space, but more importantly, it creates traction for your hands and feet so you don’t slip, especially as you get a little sweaty. The Yoga Mat also offers comfort on a hard floor.

Yoga Blankets: It is essential to feel relaxed and comfortable when practicing Yoga. Together with a Yoga Mat, use a Yoga Blanket to keep you warm during a class or session.

Yoga blocks: Allow you to develop your flexibility in a safe and effective way by providing the support you need to perform the more difficult poses. When used behind your hands, heels, or hips, they help you do poses with the correct alignment.

Yoga straps: Let you grasp feet, legs, hands, and arms that may be just beyond your reach. Like yoga blocks, these pieces of yoga equipment help you develop the flexibility needed to perform upper-level poses. In addition, yoga straps let you bind your limbs together to make it easier to hold a pose for the recommended length of time.

Yoga sandbags: Are soft, pliable weights that help you stabilize and intensify certain stretches. They generally weigh about 10 pounds each.

Inversion sling: Is a specialized piece of yoga equipment that helps to relieve back pain by facilitating low back muscle stretching and providing additional spinal traction. Slings can also be used to stretch shoulder, chest, and groin muscles.

Yoga ropes: Are wall-mounted devices that help you develop strength and flexibility. They assist in the practice of backbends or forward bends, make it easier to stretch your shoulder muscles, and help to create spinal traction.

Yoga headstander: Will help by distributing your weight through your shoulders and palms. However, your hands will still remain at floor level in the proper headstand position
